Get More Business and Brainstorm Marketing Ideas

What does every business want? More business. No matter what field or industry you’re in, you need money to stay afloat. For many companies that means more clients or customers. But how do you get the word out there? How do you let people know that you are open and ready for them to come in? Let’s create a story and then brainstorm some ideas for them and see if we can’t learn more about ways to market themselves.

I have a friend, let’s call her Sarah. Sarah makes wedding cakes. She’s really good at it, and everyone encourages her to open up her own shop. Sarah has a few friends who are getting married and gives them a discount of course since they really are good friends. But Sarah wants more. She wants to have people call her on the phone, and come into her shop and meet with her and order cakes from her, and pay full price. The first thing we need to ask Sarah, is who is your audience? Who would be interested in buying her product?

Now we have to think like a newly engaged couple: her main audience. Where would you go to look for this service? At first thought there are all the traditional methods: bridal fairs, bridal magazines, and websites. Let’s think more about websites. It’s no surprise that the internet is one of the best resources for information. It has been said that the phone book is dying directory. Better used for a booster seat for your kids or a computer monitor stand, than it is for it’s actual purpose. Everybody thinks of Google first before the turn to the yellow pages, so why not use the web as your greatest marketing tool?

Now we’re getting somewhere. But where do you start? The world wide web is vast place filled with millions of companies buying for attention. How do you begin? Sarah needs to look into her local market. There has to be couples in her city, neighboring cities, county or even state that need her services. Sarah does not really want to travel too far, otherwise it’s too hard to transport her equipment. She already knows that she doesn’t have that much competition in her own town. So after some research, she discovers that she could be listed on Google and other search engines, on the first page quite easily in her area.

Sarah follows the process that she needs to get ranked and pretty soon people are typing in “wedding cakes in my town” and Sarah pops right up. She’s getting more customers than she ever dreamed of! In fact she may have to hire a few more employees.

Because she was thinking outside of the box, Sarah was able to put her business on the internet and find the clients she had been missing out on, with just advertising in the phone book and the newspaper. Let’s take a lesson from Sarah and use the web to brainstorm marketing ideas for your company.
